Delhi Markets Guide: Chandni Chowk, Khan Market & the Best Shopping in the City

Delhi is one of the world's great shopping cities — a vast bazaar of markets, malls, and specialist districts where you can find everything from 300-year-old family-run fabric houses in the old city to contemporary Indian designer boutiques and curated concept stores in South Delhi's leafy neighbourhoods. Understanding Delhi's shopping geography is key: the city's markets are highly specialised, and knowing which area sells what saves enormous time and energy in a sprawling metropolis.

The ancient commercial heart of Delhi is Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi — a chaotic, magnificent bazaar stretching for kilometres through the Mughal old city, organised by trade in a system unchanged since the 17th century. Silver jewellery, spices, wedding saris, textiles, electronic components, and wholesale food supplies each have their own dedicated lanes: Dariba Kalan for silver, Kinari Bazaar for wedding decorations and trimmings, Khari Baoli (Asia's largest spice market) for the aromatic chaos of wholesale spices. Navigating Chandni Chowk requires accepting that you will get lost, but the getting lost is the point.

Khan Market in Central Delhi is the most expensive market in India by retail rent — a compact, tree-lined enclave of upscale boutiques, excellent bookshops (including the legendary Bahrisons and Full Circle), international deli groceries, and restaurants that serve Delhi's political and diplomatic class. For contemporary Indian fashion and design, Shahpur Jat and Hauz Khas Village have the best independent labels. Dilli Haat opposite INA market is an excellent fixed-price government crafts emporium selling quality handicrafts from every Indian state.
