Qutb Minar Delhi: The Tallest Minaret in India & Ancient Complex

The Qutb Minar is the tallest minaret in India at 72.5 metres — a 12th-century Indo-Islamic masterpiece built by Qutb ud-Din Aibak, founder of the Delhi Sultanate, from red sandstone and marble in five tapering stories of extraordinary intricacy. The complex surrounding the minaret is a palimpsest of Delhi's ancient history: the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque (Islam's first mosque in India, built 1193) was constructed from the demolished material of 27 Hindu and Jain temples, their carved pillars visible in the prayer hall. The Iron Pillar at the complex's centre is a 7-metre Gupta-era (4th–5th century CE) column of pure wrought iron that has not rusted in 1,600 years — its corrosion resistance remains a matter of metallurgical fascination. Alai Darwaza, a 1311 addition, is among the finest examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture. The complex is UNESCO-listed and one of Delhi's most rewarding ancient sites — less crowded than Humayun's Tomb, with more archaeological layers to explore. Located in South Delhi near Mehrauli, accessible by Metro to Qutb Minar station.
