Delhi to Agra: Taj Mahal Day Trip Planning Guide
The Taj Mahal — arguably the world's most beautiful building — is just 200km from Delhi and makes for one of India's great day trips. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it draws 7-8 million visitors annually and rewards anyone willing to arrive at dawn.
How to Get There
Train (recommended): The Shatabdi Express departs Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 6am, arriving Agra Cantonment at 8am. Return trains at 8:15pm. Book via IRCTC or via authorised agents 30+ days ahead. Second class AC: ₹800 round trip. Fast, comfortable, used by locals.
Hire car + driver: ~₹3,000-4,500 for a full-day Agra tour from Delhi, departing 5am. Allows flexibility to also visit Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
At the Taj Mahal
