Greater Kailash Delhi: GK's Markets, Cafes & the South Delhi Good Life
Greater Kailash — universally referred to as GK in Delhi conversation — is the south Delhi neighbourhood where the city's upper-middle-class life is most visibly and enjoyably lived. The two markets at GK 1 (M-Block Market and N-Block Market) and the connecting streets contain an excellent mix of restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and everyday shops that serve a densely residential catchment of Delhiites who know their food and expect quality. This is not a tourist neighbourhood — you will not find souvenir shops or heritage monuments — but it is an authentic and highly enjoyable portrait of contemporary Delhi's aspirational middle-class culture.
The restaurant scene in GK has developed significantly over the past decade. International cuisines — Japanese, Lebanese, Italian, Korean — sit alongside serious Indian regional cooking and the creative modern Indian restaurants that have made Delhi one of Asia's most interesting food cities. The café culture is strong: GK's coffee shops are typically well-designed, have reliable WiFi, and attract the laptop-working professionals and social lunchers who define the neighbourhood's daytime personality. The Select Citywalk mall at nearby Saket provides the full range of international retail, but GK's appeal is specifically in the human-scale, walkable street-shopping experience that Delhi's malls cannot replicate. Weekend mornings in GK — breakfast at a favourite café, a browse through the market — capture something essential about how Delhi's south side lives.
