Hauz Khas Village Delhi: Cafes, Art Galleries & Nightlife Guide
Hauz Khas Village is Delhi's most surprising neighbourhood — a medieval reservoir complex from the 14th century where deer graze alongside the ruins of a Tughlaq-era madrasa, and the surrounding village lanes are filled with concept cafes, independent art galleries, rooftop bars, and boutique fashion studios. It is simultaneously one of Delhi's best-preserved historical sites and its most fashionable social hub — an unlikely combination that somehow works with great style.
The Hauz Khas Lake and its surrounding medieval monuments — the tomb of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the ruins of a 14th-century seminary, and the deer park — sit at the centre of the village, offering extraordinary views from the crumbling battlements over the water and the green expanse of the park beyond. The monuments are freely accessible and largely uncrowded compared to Delhi's more famous Mughal sites, making them perfect for an atmospheric early morning or late afternoon visit when the light is beautiful and the cafes nearby are beginning to open.
The village's commercial lanes, concentrated around Village Lane and the surrounding streets, house a dense collection of independent creative businesses: ceramic studios, contemporary art galleries showing emerging Indian artists, slow fashion boutiques, bookshops specialising in design and architecture, and some of Delhi's most interesting restaurants and cafes. The rooftop bars around the lake's eastern edge offer some of the finest views in the city, particularly at sunset when the medieval towers are silhouetted against the sky. Hauz Khas Village is 10 minutes by auto-rickshaw from the Green Park or Hauz Khas metro stations.
