As the city’s wellness culture grows, more Delhiites are seeking serene park corners at sunrise for daily movement and mindfulness.

By 5:15am, a gentle saffron glow spreads over Lodhi Garden’s 16th-century domes, drawing scores of early risers with yoga mats slung over their shoulders. This rush isn’t a one-off—in recent months, registration for guided sunrise yoga and meditation sessions has shot up across Delhi’s public parks, marking a pronounced shift toward outdoor wellness rituals at daybreak.
Extreme heat warnings in June have magnified the appeal of morning fitness. With afternoons topping 44°C and air quality worsening later in the day, many residents are chasing the city’s freshest air—and coolest temperatures—at dawn. “By seven, the gardens are too crowded,” explained a Safdarjung Enclave yoga instructor active at Nehru Park, adding that more practitioners are arriving at sunrise to find stillness before the city stirs. This natural timetable dovetails with global studies: early outdoor movement has been linked to improved sleep, lower stress, and better metabolic health, all now top of mind in Delhi as wellness gains urgency.
The Lodi Garden circuit—between Gate No. 1 on Lodi Road and the rose garden on Amrita Shergill Marg—remains Delhi’s sunrise epicenter for meditation groups. The stone pavilion near Bada Gumbad fills with around 70 people most mornings, some enrolled in sessions run by the long-standing Lodi Garden Suryanamaskar Collective. Meanwhile, down at Nehru Park in Chanakyapuri, instructors with the Delhi Yoga Sabha hold sunrise meditation circles near the lake, capping the group at 40 for a quieter ambience. Both parks have ramped up staff presence and water stand operations for early arrivals, following feedback from last winter’s run season crowds. Elsewhere, Green Park’s Deer Park appeals to solo practitioners, offering shaded benches and relative seclusion under tamarind trees by Hauz Khas Village.
Delhi Parks and Gardens Society data released in June shows a 23% increase in park footfall before 7:00am year-on-year, most pronounced on weekends. Official sunrise yoga sessions cost Rs 150-400 per participant depending on the organiser, while informal group meditation remains free in most parks. Demand appears strongest among both younger adults—evident from the brisk walkways near IIT Delhi gate at Deer Park—and those over 50, echoing a growing attention to clean living. Sales of portable yoga mats at Khan Market’s health shops have nearly doubled since last July, according to two retailers. The Delhi Clean Eating Collective attributes some of the shift to social media, where photos of early-morning rituals have sparked new habits post-pandemic.
With National Wellness Day falling on July 12, parks are preparing for a fresh surge. Residents looking to join a sunrise group can check listings posted at Lodi Garden’s northern entrance or online via the Delhi Yoga Sabha’s event site. It’s wise to arrive by 5:10am—by 5:45, key meditation spots fill up fast, especially on weekends. As Delhi’s summer intensifies, the city’s dawn fitness crowd is likely to keep growing, chasing quiet, cool moments before another day’s commotion begins.
